I use the "V" key as alt strike and space bar (default) for reeling in. I also like setting up keyboard keys as an alternative to mouse buttons/trackpad for reeling in and "pulling" the rod tip up (striking). I suggest sticking with swing casting for now, however, because it gives long telescoping float poles the best leverage for strikes (when you raise the rod tip to set the hook) and avoids weeds. After you finish, try pressing the F11 key to switch to overhead casting (I bound it to the "\" key to make it easier to find on a laptop keyboard). It goes into such deep detail about the ins-and-outs of fishing that I could probably go out and catch a lake trout right now with what I've learned.Start out by following directions to complete the tutorial. In terms of fishing simulators, this is probably the most extensive and realistic one I've played yet. There's a lot to keep track of in Fishing Planet, such as which bait to use to snatch certain fish, the rod or reel that'll help you get a bigger and better catch, the time of day and type of weather that allows for the best bites, etc. Players buy fishing licenses in order to travel to such exotic places as Missouri, the Czech Republic, or Alberta, and then try to complete various missions to get more credits or the alternate currency called "Baitcoin" to buy gear, bait, and more licenses. The Fisherman: Fishing Planet does have a pretty impressive amount of fishing bang for your fishing buck.
